Why this ‘ugly’ retro boot is making an unexpected comeback

If you are over summer at this point, after suffering heat wave after sweltering heat wave, too hot to breathe, expect whatever is to come with the fall season . Imagine the chunky knits and ultra-comfy coats you’ll soon be pulling out of storage as you prepare for sweater time. And, as trend forecaster Jessica Richards explains, fall 2022 boot trends are also worth looking forward to, as they’re extremely versatile and full of symbolism. “Boots will be an extremely important category for fall footwear as we continue to see the market enter through three main ideas: comfort, decoration and presence,” she tells TZR via email. “As a result, the features and functions of the season’s shoes will, in some way, imply a connection with these principles.”

For example, she says, we’re likely to see an influx of all-weather stompers in the coming months. “Think rubberized, waterproof and comfortable even in more forward-thinking silhouettes and constructions, giving us a sense of comfort and preparedness for whatever might come,” says Richards. And, given the recent rise and appreciation of individualized clothing, she predicts that unconventional shoes that stand out from the pack will become increasingly popular. “We will also see many decorative details such as all-over materials, an interest in textiles, bold color palettes and original heel shapes or heavy platform constructions that demonstrate our desire to express a very personal style.”

Additionally, Richards adds that this season’s boot trends reflect recent socio-political turmoil in the United States; “Given the very serious issues of the current climate…we’ll see that terrific details – and as a corollary to those same issues, super feminine details – will drive the emotions of the season,” she says. She predicts this will manifest specifically with form-fitting boots that reflect explicit sensuality and feminine-inspired interpretations of a traditionally masculine coded aesthetic – think female biker grunge and the boundless spirit of a cowgirl in freedom.

Ahead, you’ll find more insight from Richards as well as two other experts who shine a light on this fall’s standout styles. Start saying goodbye to your summer flip flops and sandals – boot season is about to begin.

Take to the great outdoors

In the fall, Jane Kellock, founder of London-based trend forecasting agency Unique Style Platform, expects to see “fashionable rubber boots and molded rubber rain boots”. She invites you to “note the Crocs x Balenciaga collaboration, the continued influence of Bottega Veneta’s Puddle Boots and the Wellington profiles of Chanel and Dior”.

Lindsey Smecker, director of ESP Trendlab, a New York-based trend forecasting and consulting agency, echoes Kellock, saying rubber rain boots are “trendy in high and cropped styles and with pops of fun color in matte finishes”. Plus, Smecker adds that water-resistant wellies aren’t the only nature-proof boot trend for fall; “The evolution from gorpcore to footwear and the general shift to active, outdoor lifestyles makes hiking boots the perfect functional fashion statement.” For her, “the hiking boot is the perfect sneaker crossover for the colder months and looks best in earthy tones.”

Extreme heights

Richards expects platform shoes, a style that symbolizes escapism and female empowerment, to be especially prevalent. “Platforms only become more important in the fall 2022 season for what this type of figure suggests: power, presence, intimidity. The fearlessness embodied by this kind of expanded physical prowess is representative of the energy that so many of us want to feel right now,” she explains.

Totally Skin-full

An effect of the “Skin is in!” attitude, you can expect bold, sultry, form-fitting boots to be highly sought after in the coming season. “To express presence, designs will include sleek, sultry materials in thigh-high uppers: patent leathers and tight knits – even spandex – in sexy silhouettes,” says Richards.

Kellock agrees, citing Fendi and Saint Laurent’s “semi-sheer lurex and rhinestone stretch-heeled sock boots and Givenchy’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection sock boots” for influencing the trend. “There’s also the continued influence of Balenciaga’s Pantaboot – the sky-high pant-boots are ultra-fitted and should continue as commercial releases,” says the trend analyst. “Also see Rihanna, who recently launched the Adidas X Balenciaga collaboration of these now infamous boots-come-leggings.”

Biker Babe

“Inspired by the biker fashion trend and Indie Sleaze aesthetic, motocross-look boots with zippers and hardware are a key item for fall 2022,” Kellock describes. She invites you to discover Balenciaga’s boots version of her Le Cagole handbag, which “is everywhere right now,” and Miu Miu’s harness biker boots that debuted at its Fall/Winter 2022 presentation.”[The biker-inspired boot trend] also taps into the current obsession with all things Y2K style,” says Kellock, referencing the days when studs, buckles and hardware were popular adornments.

Know your angles

Forget your age-old, go-to styles – this fall season invites you to explore new, perhaps irregular, shapes and angles. For starters, says Smecker, “the square-toe silhouette is a fashion-forward upgrade to your classic black boots.” Similarly, but perhaps more appealing to unconventional dressers, is the “new mid-heeled, rolled-toe ankle boot, a rounded square-toe shape,” which Kellock shouts as an upcoming seasonal standout. The Unique Style Platform founder adds that “new heel shapes like the angled heel or the wedge inspired by those from the Prada Fall/Winter 2022 show” are also gaining popularity and worth trying out.

Plush to the touch

“Move over puffer jackets – quilted boots are the new cozy trend of this fall/winter season,” says Smecker. “You’ll even see Moon Boots return to match the nostalgic après-ski aesthetic,” she adds, referring to the oversized retro boots already endorsed by celebrities like Tracee Ellis Ross, Dua Lipa and Hailey Bieber.

Kellock echoes Smecker on padded, snow-resistant boots, urging you to check out seasonal projections from Balmain and Loewe for proof that the style will be a fall trend. In the same vein of plush shoes, Kellock also adds that she expects “the Ugg cropped boot to be a key piece worn by influencers and off-duty models such as Kaia Gerber” and Kendall Jenner in the fall. .

cool cowgirl

ICYMI: You’re seeing the high-fashion rebranding of the Horse Girl, and one of its most notable effects is an increased interest in all things horse riding – including, of course, cowboy boots . For fall, Kellock says “new western-inspired boots are now longer – look at the knee-length styles at Chanel [Fall 2022 Couture] and Chloe [Fall 2022] for inspiration.” Smecker, on the other hand, shouts for more maxed-out versions of the iconic wild and wild west staple shoe, saying, “Cowboy boots are shifting to a cowgirl aesthetic space, with a more playful use of colors and metals.”
