London Fashion Week may be known for its innovation and creativity on the catwalk, but fashion insiders know that the British branch of the fashion capital’s four storefronts has just as much wardrobe inspiration at front row than on the track itself.
Street style in New York can be known and loved for its minimalism and chic simplicity, in Milan for its rich and luxurious exuberance and in Paris for its designer highlights and drama, those attending London Fashion Week should really push the boundaries of fashion and experiment in ways that other cities wouldn’t tend to dare.
And Londoners are not ready for any challenge…
This season has seen an unexpected drop in temperatures, making September shows much less balmy than what we’re used to. Of course, in terms of fashion, this was great news, marking the return of every savvy dresser’s favorite styling tool; overlay.
And no, we’re not just talking about putting on a coat.
We’re talking long opera gloves and thigh-high socks with see-through dresses. We are talking about shirts and boots under long sundresses. We’re talking giant blouse collars layered over functional outerwear. We’re talking oversized blazers with almost nude skirts.
Do you see where we are coming from?
Overlay is not just on practicality. It’s about mixing textures and juxtaposed concepts. These are unusual visual concoctions. It’s about combining the unexpected and wearing it with confidence.
