It turns out civilians are the real stars of street style

The end of fashion month is always bittersweet. As chaos sets in, it’s also the end of the new season’s collections to devour, but more importantly, it’s the end of unbeatable street style. Or does it? It seems like Instagram accounts have been popping up all over the world to document the daily looks of regular passers-by and city dwellers. Much like the seemingly overnight success of Humans of New York, these account owners are taking submissions as well as their own photos featuring spectacular outfits worn by unassuming citizens. At the end of the day, you don’t need fashion month as an excuse to look your best.

These accounts have amassed massive followers, likely due, in part, to the outfits being the perfect combination of aspiration and accessibility. Scrolling through the feeds makes me want to take off my black leggings and hoodie for my next grocery run and pull out those leopard pants that’s been gathering dust in my closet, waiting to see the light of day (or night). Below, see a list of top street style accounts by city. Forget your next airport tracksuit — after following these accounts, you’ll be hitting your Levi’s 501s in no time.

It was the catwalk account that started my obsession with following actual street style accounts. The grid seems to have somehow captured French girl magic and bottled it into an endless array of little squares, each one emitting more freshness than the next. This account is the best of stereotypical French style: oversized trench coats, Converse and stripes, the perfect leopard coat. You name it; this account captured it. It’s no wonder the account has amassed over 700,000 followers.

Watching New York, seen by photographer Johnny Cirillo, is a highly stylized version of Parisians in Paris. He scours the streets in search of New York’s best-dressed, which is no small feat considering the competition. It even includes video clips of some of the most iconic individuals, such as these cowboy boot roller skates. Her page is one of the funniest to follow, and while some outfits may be over the top, they’ll at least put a smile on your face.

This account is the Italian equivalent of Parisians in Paris, but not for lack of proper style. The streets of Milan are clearly teeming with chic Italians, who seem like quirkier versions of their Parisian counterparts with a bit more individuality. From hand-painted trench coats to matching designs, the account seems to have a bit of everything. To top it off, you’ll also find a healthy dose of dresses on mopeds, the quintessential Italian accessory.

While most would say Brits aren’t necessarily known for their sense of style, this account challenges that notion to the max. My favorite posts come from the Tube, which seems to be the most accessible track in London.

Amsterdam locals love their nappies, making it a great way to peoplewatch via their local street style account. The outerwear wish list is endless, from leather coats to plaid puffer jackets. Even better, 90% of the photos are taken of cyclists, a stereotype of the city that we can certainly follow.

The Spaniards are last on the list, but not for their lack of style. This account is a stripped down version of other street style accounts, with more wearable looks you might find in your own closet (which makes for great outfit inspiration). I would recommend following if you often find yourself in a rut and not sure what to wear, but still want to work with what you have. The Spaniards seem to have mastered it.
