A LOCAL businessman has opened a vintage designer clothing store in Elgin.
Andrew Gentleman owns Clean4Me on South Street and has worked in the cleaning industry in Moray for over 20 years.
However, recently he has expanded his business to also sell vintage designer clothing with his new venture ‘Pretty New Clothing’ – inspired by former Oasis star Liam Gallagher’s own ‘Pretty Green’ clothing brand.
Andrew says the expansion happened “naturally” and it was time to “try something new” after more than two decades of working in the cleaning industry.
“We used to clean a lot of Forces uniforms, so what was happening was people were seeing them and telling us how smart they looked,” he said.
“On the back of that, I bought a few uniforms just to put them on display at the start.
“From there, everything went from uniforms to vintage uniforms, then vintage clothes and almost new clothes.
“That’s really how it all came together.”
Like many business owners in Moray, Andrew has struggled to cope with the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic.
However, her recent expansion into selling clothes alongside her cleaning business portends a brighter future.
“Obviously it was a worrying time for us,” he said.
“It was pretty scary actually, as it is for a lot of businesses, but we weathered the storm.
“I thought about it for a while, so I’m glad I finally did it.
“I’ve had a great response so far and the laundry side of the business is always busy, so hopefully that will stay that way for Pretty New Clothing as well.”
Andrew says the company sells a variety of clothing, including vintage designer clothes and newer pieces, as well as shoes.
This includes Doc Martens, Converse, Bathing Ape t-shirts, vintage football shirts, and a variety of other items.
However, Andrew warns that due to the nature of selling vintage or nearly new clothes, once something has sold, it’s gone.
“When I started the Facebook page, it went crazy,” he said.
“There are so many people asking me if I have this or that, but unfortunately when I get something and it sells out, it’s gone.
“I might expand more on the clothing side in the coming months as well, but for now I’m just going to see how it goes and add things along the way.
“I’ve really enjoyed it so far. I’m kind of excited to see this side and hope to see it grow.”
