Deiji Studios is the go-to brand to keep you cool and comfortable during the summer

Australian fashion brand Deiji Studios is the go-to for keeping you cool and comfortable during the summer.

Co-founders Emma Nelson and Juliette Arkeness tell us about the brand’s journey, which began as simple linen bedding six years ago.

Tell us about your career(s).

Between us, we have worked in various roles within the fashion industry for 10 years – design, graphic design, visual merchandising and in retail. We drew inspiration from all facets of these experiences to develop the idea of what Deiji would become.

Contemporary Deji Studios

What inspired you to work in the fashion industry and start Deiji Studios?

The initial brand started with linen bedding that organically evolved into loungewear, which is what we are now known for. We wanted to create timeless pieces that would take you from your bed and around the house to the outdoors, for coffee with friends to even a cozy venue with a cozy feel while looking your best. We live near the coast, so this slow and carefree lifestyle really inspired us to design clothes that you didn’t have to think about, but that made you look and feel better.

Tell us about the design process of Deiji Studios pieces.

Much of our design process is a collaboration of ideas between Emma, myself, and our lead designer. Most of our designs are unisex fits, oversized and based on how certain shirts or pants make you feel more than anything. We take care to only produce things that we would wear ourselves. Square shapes and small details frequent our creations.

Where do you draw your influences for your creations?

We are influenced by culture and furniture. During our years of travel, we have found inspiration in Japan, Korea and France. From efficient simplicity and less is more attitude in Korea and Japan, to the chic of French culture. We are lovers of furniture and lamps, these also inspire us when designing.

This year you are celebrating six years of Deiji Studios. How have things evolved since the launch of the brand?

Time has passed so quickly, our team has grown and so has our love for what we do. Our brand has truly evolved more than anything to be more conscious of the materials we use for our designs – which have a ripple effect on the state of our planet. We always design with the thought in mind – “is it durable?” “can it break down?” “Are people going to wear them this year?”. With this avant-garde, we design pieces that will become favorites or must-haves in your wardrobes for years to come.

What sets Deiji Studios apart from other brands?

We like to keep things simple and avoid anything “trendy”. We believe in slow fashion and creating unique pieces that can easily be added to your wardrobe as staples. We do not launch large collections, but rather design small, easy-to-wear collections with beautiful shapes and cuts.

Over the years, what were the obstacles you encountered while building the brand? And the milestones?

Working with sustainable materials has been challenging, although it’s something we’re very keen on using and one of our main business goals. Factory Covid delays and shutdowns have presented many challenges in recent years. Our accomplishments would by far be the great team we get to work with every day and other creatives we’ve met in the industry.

Cool Deji Studios

When it comes to summer dressing, what are your favorite pieces?

My favorite clothes for summer are the Ease pants and any of the soft sets. They are light and pleasant on the skin during the warmer months.

This is the Summer Escape number – where do you want to escape this summer?

I would love to escape to New Caledonia or Greece this year, who knows…!
