Creepy and spooky “companions” in KAWS x “Fortnite”

I thought the Balenciaga collaboration would be Fortnitethe biggest coup of all time? Apparently, it wasn’t even the most important collab in gaming of 2021 because Fortnite has just unveiled its partnership with KAWS.

Specifically, KAWS is part of FortniteThe “Fortnitemare” promotion, linked to the game’s Halloween getaways, gives a skeleton Companion skin that can be purchased, worn in-game, and then used to re-enact the classic Halloween cartoon “The Skeleton Dance”.

Not quite as involved as Fortnitebut at least it’s both thematic and a riff on KAWS’ own “Dissected” collectibles.

However FortniteThe Balenciaga collaboration was nothing if not divisive, its path was forged by crossovers like Gucci x RobloxLouis Vuittonx League of Legends and other similar reconciliations.

That is to say, luxury fashion and Esport are no longer worlds apart.

Indeed, as Highsnobiety has explored in detail, the digital worlds of games like Fortnite are the next big frontier for this type of business.

The KAWS collaboration is a new wrinkle in the equation, as it’s the first time a high profile artist has joined Fortnite.

It’s not like anyone’s asking for it — a lot of KAWS fans are actually reacting with discouragement to the artist’s Instagram post — but it’s there and, honestly, it makes a lot of sense.

At this stage of his career, especially, KAWS is less an artist than a collaborative machine. From affordable UNIQLO t-shirts to perfumes to boxes of Reeses Puffs, KAWS has co-designed it all.

In fact, KAWS x Fortnite really is the perfect crossover: mainstream artist + mainstream video game = big bucks. Additionally, nearly every demographic that plays Fortnite probably familiar with the cartoons used as fodder for the production of KAWS.
