Owning her own business with seven dependent children wasn’t quite at the top of Erica Hermann’s list when she started her family, but that’s exactly what happened to her when she started Coffee and Mayhem at Avon Lake.
When Hermann went on maternity leave, she opened the shop to earn extra money while her husband worked on home renovations.
“I love it,” said Hermann, who is a nurse by trade. “(My husband, TJ, and I) started (Coffee and Chaos) and I never went back.”
The Hermanns started their business with no retail experience.
When asked if she thought that was what would have happened, Hermann replied “no, not at all”.
The storefront, located at 690 Avon Belden Road, opened in November 2021. It offers free coffee to its customers while they shop.
Hermann said offering a cup of joe suited her because she loves coffee.
She said it was part of the branding she has for the store.
The “chaos” part of the store’s name comes from the hectic family life she leads with the seven young people in the house.
Hermann said she has no plans to return to nursing work and her husband has no plans to return to home improvement as long as they both operate the store.
Part of the business model is to sell their items on Facebook Live, Instagram, their own app as well as their website, coffeeandchaosboutique.commentsold.com.
Store hours vary daily.
